Fenner Nature Center’s

42nd Annual Apple Butter Festival!

OCTOBER 10th & 11th from 11am-5pm

With warm temperatures and sunshine prevailing, and the changing colors of Fall, the Apple Butter Festival on October 10 and 11 was the perfect weekend to get outside! Visitors enjoyed the sights, sounds, and smells that are the community tradition of making apple butter.

During the week leading up to the festival, Fenner Nature Center hosted 15 tours of school children, homeschooling families, and seniors. They learned about the tradition and history behind apple butter, and helped us stir apple butter in the giant, copper kettle.

Visitors on the weekend were able to help stir the apple butter as well, alongside celebrity stirrers like Karen Love and Jack Robbins of WLNZ, Tim Barron of Radio Michigan, Tony Baltimore of Lansing BWL, Rick Preuss of Preuss Pets, and Tracie Huehs of Wilcox School. Away from the kettle, many visitors could be found in the festival field carving and painting pumpkins or trying out stilts and other pioneer pastimes such as playing the game of “Graces’”or using a cross-cut saw.

Thanks to our performers, Mike Bass, Clemente Barron, Basement Bluegrass, Sierra Denae, Alexis Wright, L.A. Cloggers, Kendall Cassella, the Springtails, Taylor Taylor, and Bobby Standel, the festival field was alive with music throughout the weekend. On Saturday night, the festival hosted a brand new event: a Brown Graff Apple Ale tasting in partnership with Sleepwalker Spirits and Ale. The tasting and partnership were a great extension of what the Apple Butter Festival is all about—celebrating community, the Fall harvest, and all the goodness that can be found close to home.
